Labuan Bajo 3 Day Itinerary: Town + Komodo Perfectly

Most visitors treat Labuan Bajo as a place to sleep before a Komodo boat leaves. That is a waste. The harbor town on the western tip of Flores has enough of its own — a limestone cave 15 minutes from the marina, a genuinely good seafood night market, sunset ridges above a bay full of phinisi masts — to earn a full day. This Labuan Bajo 3 day itinerary is the exact plan we hand to guests who ask how to split their time: one day in town, one full day among the islands, and one slow morning before an afternoon flight out.

Three days is the sweet spot: long enough to see the dragons, Padar and the town itself, short enough to bolt onto a Bali trip without a visa headache. Here is the frame — each day is detailed below, and our full Labuan Bajo guide covers everything this post skips.

All-in, budget roughly $220–300 per person for the three days at backpacker level, or $450–700 with a nicer hotel and private touring — flights excluded.

Day 1 — Arrival, Batu Cermin and the Waterfront

Komodo International Airport (LBJ) sits barely ten minutes from the waterfront, which makes Day 1 far more usable than in most Indonesian destinations. Direct flights from Bali take about 1 hour 10 minutes; Jakarta is around 2 hours 40 minutes. Every route, airline and overland option is compared in our getting to Labuan Bajo guide. Land by early afternoon, drop your bags, eat something, and start with the town’s one genuine sight.

15:00 — Batu Cermin cave

Batu Cermin (“Mirror Rock”) is a limestone cavern 4 km east of town, a 15-minute scooter or taxi ride. The famous mirror effect — sunlight bouncing off polished rock walls — peaks late morning, but an afternoon visit means you often have the chamber to yourself. Look for fossilized coral in the walls: this whole hill was seabed. A visit takes 30–45 minutes; bring around IDR 100,000 to cover the ticket and a tip for the mandatory local guide, and wear shoes you can crouch in — one passage drops to about a meter high.

16:30 — Dive shops and the main street

Walk Soekarno Hatta, the single main street, where half a dozen dive shops sit within 500 meters. Even if you are not diving this trip, browsing them is the fastest way to understand the marine geography you will cross tomorrow — most shops keep a current map on the wall showing Manta Point, Batu Bolong and the Cauldron.

17:30 — Sunset, then the fish market

Head up to Puncak Waringin viewpoint, five minutes above the harbor, or grab a waterfront table. The sun drops behind the islands around 18:15 year-round, silhouetting the phinisi fleet at anchor. Then walk to Kampung Ujung night market at the south end of the waterfront: pick your fish straight off the ice and pay by the kilo — expect IDR 80,000–150,000/kg grilled, with rice, water spinach and sambal included. Day 2 — The Full-Day Komodo Boat Trip

This is the day the whole trip is built around. A shared speedboat Komodo day trip starts from $120 per person and covers the classic loop: harbor check-in at 05:30, the Padar viewpoint climb first (about 40 minutes up — we schedule it early precisely to beat the heat), a dragon trek on Komodo island with a licensed ranger, a swim at Pink Beach, lunch on board, the Taka Makassar sandbar, and a drift over Manta Point before docking back around 17:30–18:00. Slower open-deck boats run the same route for $90–120 but return after dark.

Park fees are separate and paid per day: IDR 250,000 (~$16) entry for foreign visitors, IDR 200,000 ranger fee per group of up to five on Komodo (IDR 150,000 on Padar), and IDR 25,000 harbor fee. Budget $40–50 per person on top of the boat price and carry it in cash.

One 2026 change matters for planning: since April, a 1,000-visitor daily cap applies to Komodo and Padar through the SiOra reservation system. In July and August, book your boat — and therefore your slot — at least two to three weeks ahead. Day 3 — Rangko Cave, Then Fly Out

If your flight leaves after 15:00, you have time for the region’s best half-day trip. Rangko Cave is a turquoise saltwater pool inside a limestone chamber near a Bugis fishing village about 90 minutes’ drive northeast of town, followed by a 15-minute boat crossing — the boat charter runs roughly IDR 400,000–500,000 return and carries up to six, so split it. Leave your hotel at 07:30, be swimming by 09:45 while the tour groups are still on the road, and be back in town by 13:00 with salt in your hair. The light beam that makes the photos happens closer to 11:00, so linger if your flight allows.

Prefer a soft landing instead? Town spas charge IDR 250,000–450,000 for a 90-minute massage, and the bakeries near the harbor open from 07:00. Either way, the airport run takes ten minutes and IDR 50,000–100,000 by taxi; check in 90 minutes before a domestic departure.

Where to Stay by Budget

Eating Well in Between

The short version: night market for grilled fish on Day 1, a proper harbor-view breakfast before your boat on Day 2 (most operators include one on board — we do), and save the long Italian dinner for Day 2 evening when you have earned it. The main street holds surprisingly good wood-fired pizza and Flores coffee roasters. Getting Around Town

Central Labuan Bajo is walkable — barely 2 km end to end — but it is hilly and hot by 10:00. Scooter rental costs IDR 75,000–100,000 per day (carry an international license; police checks happen near the airport). Ojek motorbike hops around town run IDR 10,000–20,000. Ride-hailing apps have thin coverage here, so for the Rangko run or a Batu Cermin round trip, have your hotel call a car with driver: IDR 600,000–800,000 for the day.

Five Mistakes We See Every Week

1. Booking the boat for arrival day. Boats leave at 05:30; no same-day flight lands in time, and building your itinerary so a delayed evening flight cascades into a missed departure is the most common self-inflicted wound we rescue people from. Keep the boat on Day 2, always.

2. Ignoring the SiOra cap. A cheap boat with no reservation slot is not a bargain — it is a boat ride past islands you cannot enter. Ask any operator to confirm your named SiOra booking before you pay.

3. Carrying only cards. Park fees, ojeks, the night market and most boat balances are cash. ATMs cluster on the main street and run empty on weekends; withdraw IDR 1.5–2 million on arrival.

4. Climbing Padar at midday. The viewpoint staircase has zero shade and hits 33°C by noon. Do it at 06:30 on a day trip — or watch our guests’ sunrise photos and book the liveaboard next time.

5. Skipping seasickness pills in January–February. The west monsoon puts real chop on the crossing. Captain Yusuf’s standing advice: take the pill 30 minutes before departure, not when you start feeling it.
