Komodo National Park

Komodo Island — Home of the Dragons

The 390 km² volcanic stronghold of the world’s largest living lizard. Trek savannah trails with licensed rangers, snorkel reefs ranked among Earth’s richest, and step into a UNESCO World Heritage habitat where prehistory still walks the ground.

About the Island

The Stronghold of a Living Legend

Lying between Sumbawa and Flores in Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands, Komodo Island is the primary habitat of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) — an apex predator that grows to 3 meters and 70 kilograms. The island spans 390 square kilometers of savannah grasslands, dry tropical forest, mangrove fringes and volcanic ridgelines, sitting astride the Wallace Line where Asian and Australasian wildlife meet. Surrounding waters protect more than 1,000 fish species and 260 coral species, making this one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Every dragon trek is led by a licensed ranger — independent hikes are not permitted — and a daily visitor cap keeps the experience uncrowded.
