Komodo Dragon Tour from Labuan Bajo — See Wild Dragons Safely

A Komodo dragon tour is a ranger-led trek on Komodo or Rinca Island to see wild Komodo dragons in their only natural habitat. Every tour departs by boat from Labuan Bajo, entry is capped at 1,000 visitors per day, and a licensed ranger must accompany every group. With Komodo Trip — operated by Komodo Luxury since 2015 — the dragon trek is included in every day trip and liveaboard we run.

Where You See Wild Komodo Dragons: Komodo vs Rinca

Wild Komodo dragons live on only five islands on Earth, and tours visit the two managed by the national park:

  • Komodo Island (Loh Liang) — the classic trek. Bigger island, longer trails (short 1 km, medium 2 km, long 4 km), dragons often seen near the ranger station and watering holes. This is the island under the 1,000-visitor daily quota.
  • Rinca Island (Loh Buaya) — denser dragon population and, statistically, the more reliable sightings. The new elevated boardwalk keeps groups safe while dragons roam below.

Our crews check ranger reports each morning and route your boat to whichever island is sighting best that week — one advantage of a local operator that runs boats every single day.

How the Ranger Trek Works

Rangers lead groups of up to 10 guests along marked trails, carrying the traditional forked staff. Treks last 45–90 minutes depending on the trail. Rangers position you for photos at a safe distance — typically 5–8 meters — and explain dragon behavior, nesting mounds and the island ecosystem. Wear closed shoes, carry water, and never wander off-trail.

Komodo Dragon Tour Prices 2026

The dragon trek is bundled into every Komodo Trip departure — you never buy it separately:

  • Speedboat day trip — from $120/person: dragon trek plus Padar Island, Pink Beach and Manta Point in one day.
  • 3D2N liveaboard — from $220/person: both dragon islands possible, plus snorkeling stops at a relaxed pace.
  • Private charter — from $1,200/boat/day: arrive at the ranger station before day-trip crowds land.

Park fees (IDR 400k–650k per person, including the ranger fee) are paid at the park — see the full fee breakdown.

Safety: What the Rules Are Really For

Komodo dragons are wild apex predators — up to 3 meters and 90 kg, with a venomous bite. Incidents are extremely rare precisely because the ranger system works. The rules: stay with your ranger, keep distance, no sudden movements, no flash close-ups, and tell your guide in advance about any open wounds; menstruating guests are asked to inform rangers so groups can be positioned conservatively. Children are welcome but must stay within arm’s reach. More in our safety guide.

Best Time for Dragon Sightings

Dragons are visible year-round, but the dry season (April–November) concentrates them near water sources, making sightings easier. In the July–August mating season males are more active — and the quota fills fastest. December–March treks are quieter and greener, with equally reliable sightings on Rinca. Check the month-by-month guide.

Ethical Wildlife Viewing

We follow park conservation protocol: no feeding, no baiting, no touching, groups capped, and fees that fund ranger patrols and dragon research. The 1,000-visitor daily quota exists so tourism and conservation can coexist — how the quota works. Want the deeper biology?
