Day by Day: Three Romantic Days at Sea

Day 1 — Labuan Bajo to the Kalong Anchorage

Board at Labuan Bajo Harbor at 09:00. Dewi, our guest experience lead, walks you to your cabin while the crew loads fresh produce; by 09:30 you are moving. The first leg to Kelor Island takes about 90 minutes on a phinisi, and the 15-minute hill climb there is a gentle warm-up with a view back across the harbor. Snorkel the house reef off the beach — the water holds 27–28°C most of the year — then cruise on to Manjarite for a second, quieter reef in the early afternoon.

By 17:45 Captain Yusuf drops anchor off Kalong Island, and this is where the honeymoon really starts. Around 18:15, as the light goes copper, tens of thousands of flying foxes lift off the mangroves and stream across the sunset for twenty minutes or more. Chef Bayu serves dinner on deck while it happens. Afterwards, ask the crew to cut the deck lights: there is no town within sight, and on a moonless night the Milky Way and the Southern Cross are ridiculous. The anchorage is sheltered, so the boat barely moves while you sleep.

Day 2 — Padar Sunrise, Dragons, and a Pink Beach Picnic

This is the day the early start pays for itself. Captain Yusuf weighs anchor at 04:15 — a deliberate 30 minutes ahead of the day-boat fleet — so you are on the Padar jetty by 05:00 and climbing with headlamps. The staircase is roughly 800 steps and takes 25–35 minutes at honeymoon pace; the famous three-bay viewpoint catches first light around 05:15–05:40. Arrive on our schedule and you will share it with a handful of people instead of a few hundred; the day boats land from about 06:30. Breakfast is served while you cruise to Loh Liang on Komodo Island. Andi, our lead park guide, pairs you with licensed rangers for the medium trail — 45–60 minutes through dry savannah where the dragons, up to three metres long, laze near the waterholes. The ranger trekking fee is IDR 200,000 per group of up to five, so a couple shares one fee. Late morning is Pink Beach: Chef Bayu packs a picnic, the crew sets it up above the tideline, and the reef starts barely 50 metres off the sand. In the afternoon you drift-snorkel Manta Point, where reef mantas with 3–4 metre wingspans cruise the channel when the current runs. Day 3 — Taka Makassar, Kanawa, and Home

No alarm today. Coffee at sunrise, then a short hop to Taka Makassar, a crescent sandbar that sits barely above the tide — at 07:30 you will likely have its few hundred metres of white sand to yourselves. A final snorkel at Kanawa Island usually turns up turtles on the slope. The boat turns for home around 11:00, dolphins sometimes riding the bow on the crossing, and you step off at Labuan Bajo between 14:00 and 15:00. Our advice: book one extra hotel night in town rather than a same-day flight, and finish the trip with a harbor-view sunset dinner instead of an airport queue.

Privacy for Couples: Shared Boat vs Private Charter

A private charter in Komodo from $1,200/day changes the arithmetic completely: the boat sleeps 6–10, but for a honeymoon it carries exactly two, and the itinerary bends to you. Skip Kelor, stay longer at Pink Beach, eat at 20:00 instead of 18:30, have the crew anchor somewhere no other boat chose that night. Honeymoon Budget: What Two People Actually Pay

The fee line is the one couples forget. Foreign visitors pay IDR 250,000 (about $16) park entry per person per day, ranger fees of IDR 200,000 per group on Komodo and IDR 150,000 on Padar, plus an IDR 25,000 harbor fee — budget $40–50 each across three days and carry some rupiah cash. In local terms, a shared 3D2N berth sits around IDR 3.5–5.5 million per person at 2026 market rates, so the from-$220 tier is genuinely the floor of the market, not a teaser number.

Best Months for Calm Seas

The dry season runs April to November, but it is not one season for couples. April–June is our favourite honeymoon window: glassy morning crossings, Padar still green-gold from the rains, and water at 27°C. July–August brings the most reliable sun but also the southeast trade winds, which can make afternoon open-water legs choppy — fine for most, less fine if either of you is seasick-prone. September–November is the second sweet spot: seas flatten again, the water warms to about 28°C, and manta encounters are consistently good. December–March is the wet season; January and February in particular see swells that cancel departures, and we simply do not recommend booking a honeymoon then.

Padar at first light is the most-requested proposal spot we run, and it works if you treat it as an operation. Tell Dewi when you book — quietly, on WhatsApp, so nothing appears on a shared itinerary your partner might see. The 04:15 departure is the entire trick: at 05:15 the third viewpoint is yours, by 07:00 it is a queue. Keep the ring in a zipped pocket for the 800-step climb, and let your ranger know at the jetty; ours are practiced at drifting out of frame and catching the moment on your phone from a discreet distance. If you want aerial footage, plan ahead: drone flights in the park require a BTNK permit at IDR 2,000,000 per day, which we can arrange with at least two weeks’ notice.
