How Shared Trips Work

Komodo shared trips operate on a simple, convenient model: scheduled boats depart daily from Labuan Bajo with groups of 8-15 travelers who have individually booked their spots. You share the boat, the crew, the experiences, and the costs — making it significantly more affordable than private charters while still enjoying professional service, quality boats, and comprehensive itineraries that cover all the must-see destinations.

The social dynamic of shared trips is often a highlight rather than a drawback. Travelers from different countries and backgrounds come together over shared adventures, creating a uniquely international atmosphere. Bonds form quickly when you’re hiking Padar Island at sunrise together, spotting your first Komodo dragon, or snorkeling alongside manta rays. Many guests leave with new friends from around the world and memories of spontaneous conversations under starlit skies.

Our shared trips use well-maintained wooden boats with comfortable facilities. Depending on the duration, accommodation ranges from open-deck sleeping (on shorter trips) to shared or semi-private cabins (on multi-day voyages). All meals are freshly prepared aboard by the crew, equipment is provided, and experienced English-speaking guides lead every excursion. The itinerary is fixed but well-designed to cover maximum destinations in the available time.

Who Are Shared Trips Best For?

Shared trips are ideal for solo travelers, couples, and small friend groups who want an affordable Komodo experience and enjoy meeting other travelers. They’re particularly popular with backpackers, young professionals, digital nomads, and anyone who appreciates the social energy of group travel. If you prefer privacy, a more customized itinerary, or traveling with young children, consider our private charter options instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a shared trip?
Book online through our website for guaranteed spots, or visit our office in Labuan Bajo for walk-in bookings. Online booking secures your preferred date and trip option. We confirm bookings within 24 hours and provide full trip details including meeting point, time, and what to bring.
What if I’m traveling solo?
Solo travelers are very welcome on shared trips! In fact, about 40% of our shared trip guests are solo travelers. The group dynamic makes it easy to connect with others, and many solo guests tell us the social aspect was a highlight. You’ll never feel alone on a shared Komodo adventure.
Can I choose my travel companions?
Shared trips are open to all bookings, so the group composition varies. However, the Komodo traveler community tends to be adventurous, friendly, and international. If you’re traveling with a group of 6+ friends and want guaranteed spots together, we recommend booking early or considering a private boat for maximum group flexibility.
What happens if the weather is bad?
If conditions are unsafe for sailing, we will either modify the itinerary to visit sheltered sites or reschedule to the next available departure at no extra charge. Our captains monitor weather continuously and prioritize safety above all else. Full cancellations are rare — Komodo has excellent weather for most of the year.
Are shared trips available year-round?
Yes, shared trips depart daily throughout the year. During peak season (June-August), additional departures are added to meet demand. During the quieter months (January-March), some multi-day departures may require minimum group sizes. Day trips run daily regardless of season, weather permitting.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours receive a 50% refund or free rescheduling to another date. No-shows are non-refundable. Weather-related cancellations by the operator receive full refund or free rescheduling.
