Komodo National Park sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle — the epicenter of global marine biodiversity — making a Komodo trip one of the world’s premier diving destinations. The park’s unique position at the convergence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans creates nutrient-rich currents that support an extraordinary diversity of marine life, from massive manta rays and reef sharks to pygmy seahorses and flamboyant cuttlefish. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced diver, our Komodo diving packages offer unforgettable underwater experiences at some of the planet’s most spectacular dive sites.
Batu Bolong — The Pinnacle of Komodo Diving
Rising from the deep ocean floor to within a few meters of the surface, Batu Bolong is widely considered the single best dive site in Komodo National Park. This submerged pinnacle is encrusted with vibrant soft corals in every conceivable color — purple, orange, red, yellow — creating an underwater garden that seems almost artificial in its beauty. The nutrient-rich currents attract enormous schools of fusiliers, surgeonfish, and anthias that swirl around the rock in mesmerizing formations.
Larger predators patrol the deeper slopes — white-tip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, and occasionally eagle rays cruise past the wall. The key to diving Batu Bolong is timing the current correctly — our experienced dive masters know the precise windows when currents are manageable and visibility peaks at 25+ meters. This site is suitable for intermediate to advanced divers due to the current dynamics.
Manta Point (Makassar Reef) — Dance with Giants
Manta Point is a cleaning station where oceanic manta rays — with wingspans reaching 5 meters and weighing up to 1,400 kg — gather to have parasites removed by cleaner wrasse. For divers, the experience of kneeling on the sandy bottom at 12 meters depth while mantas glide overhead in slow, graceful arcs is genuinely life-changing. During peak season (May–September), encounters with 5–20 mantas per dive are common.
This site is accessible to all certification levels, including Open Water divers, making it one of the most democratic world-class dive experiences anywhere. The cleaning station operates year-round, though manta numbers peak during the dry season. Even snorkelers can enjoy close encounters from the surface — included in all our snorkeling packages.
Castle Rock — The Shark Highway
Castle Rock is Komodo’s premier site for shark encounters. This submerged seamount rises from 70 meters to 4 meters below the surface, creating a current-swept platform where large pelagic species gather to feed. Expect white-tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, giant trevally, Spanish mackerel, and occasionally hammerheads cruising through the blue water alongside the reef. The flat top of the rock is carpeted with hard corals and populated by thousands of reef fish creating a kaleidoscope of color and movement.
Strong currents make Castle Rock suitable for advanced divers, but the reward is an adrenaline-charged dive unlike anything else in Indonesia. Our dive masters use current-reading techniques and local knowledge developed over thousands of dives to position you safely in the best viewing spots.
Crystal Rock — Pristine Hard Coral Gardens
Crystal Rock takes its name from the exceptional water clarity that characterizes this site — visibility regularly exceeds 30 meters. A small pinnacle breaking the surface marks the location of an underwater wonderland of pristine hard coral formations, sea fans, and barrel sponges. The site is famous for its resident school of sweetlips, massive Napoleon wrasse that approach divers with curious confidence, and the occasional passing whale shark during migration season (October–November).
Crystal Rock is slightly more sheltered than Castle Rock and suitable for intermediate divers, making it an excellent second dive when paired with one of the more current-intensive sites.
Tatawa Besar — The Perfect First Komodo Dive
For less experienced divers or those looking for a relaxed underwater exploration, Tatawa Besar offers a gentle sloping reef with manageable currents and phenomenal biodiversity. The coral gardens here are among the most photogenic in the park — fields of table corals, staghorn formations, and colorful soft corals provide habitat for hawksbill turtles, blue-spotted stingrays, moray eels, reef octopus, and hundreds of reef fish species. This is also an excellent snorkeling site included in our standard Komodo trip itineraries.
Siaba Besar — Turtle Paradise
If turtles are your passion, Siaba Besar delivers. The seagrass beds and coral gardens around this island support a large population of both green and hawksbill sea turtles. Dives here are gentle and meditative — drifting slowly over coral bommies while turtles glide past, octopuses change color on the reef, and cuttlefish hover in the current. Maximum depth is 18 meters, making this perfect for newer divers and extended bottom times.
Diving Conditions and What to Expect
Komodo’s diving conditions vary by season. Dry season (April–November): Water temperature 25–28°C, visibility 15–30 meters, calmer seas, peak manta activity. A 3mm wetsuit is sufficient. Wet season (December–March): Water temperature 27–30°C, visibility 10–20 meters, occasional rain, fewer boats. Some northern sites may be inaccessible due to swell.
Currents are a defining feature of Komodo diving — they’re what make the marine life so abundant but also require respect and experience. Our dive masters conduct thorough pre-dive briefings covering current conditions, entry/exit points, and safety procedures. All dives include surface marker buoys, and our boats maintain constant visual contact with dive groups.
Dive Packages and Certification
Our Komodo diving packages cater to all levels. Discover Scuba programs are available for complete beginners, while certified divers (OW and above) can join regular dive trips with 2–4 dives per day. Equipment rental includes BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, computer, and tank. Nitrox is available on select boats.
For dedicated dive trips, our 4-day 3-night packages maximize bottom time with 8–12 dives across the park’s best sites. Combine diving with the classic sightseeing itinerary for the ultimate Komodo trip experience.
